Ray N. Carey, 77, of Knox, began his first 5K on the streets of gold on Sunday, November 15, 2009. Ray was born February 18, 1934, in Winamac, IN, to the late Floyd and Marie (Cihak) Carey. He was also preceded in death by a son, Ray N. Carey Jr., and brothers, Bob (Elizabeth) Carey and Dale (Donna) Carey.
On January 12, 1952, in Starke County, he married his beloved wife, Patricia Stephenson, who passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2009. He is survived by their sons, Mike (Janet) Carey of North Liberty, IN, and Chuck (Jennie) Carey of Plymouth, IN; his sister, Phyllis (Bill) Wayne of California; brothers, Jim (Beth) Carey of Florida and Al (Delores) Carey of Florida; and grandchildren, Keith (Ashley) Carey, Jeremy (Tanaria) Carey, Kim McCullom, Patty (Brandon) Gibson, Joe Carey and Alex Carey; and great-grandchildren, Luke Carey and Tyson Gibson.
Ray retired from driving for Kuhn Distributors and also from the Indiana Dept. of Transportation. He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Air Force as an aircraft mechanic.
Ray was a familiar face at area road races, competing in 5K′s, 10K′s and the Detroit and Boston Marathons. He marked a personal best 10K time of 33.03 and ran his last race, The John Glenn Rocket Run, winning his age division on Sept. 26, 2009. He will be missed on the racing circuit and by the members of the Calumet Region Striders where he was a longtime Gold Cup member.
Ray was an avid fisherman and high school sports enthusiast. He supported the Knox Redskins, the Oregon-Davis Girls basketball team, and the John Glenn soccer team where his youngest grandson, Alec, was captain. Ray could be found at numerous cross country races and track meets encouraging and coaching young runners.
Visitation was Tuesday, Nov. 17th, from 4 to 8 p.m. in M.C. Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services were Wednesday Nov. 18th, at 10 a.m. in M.C. Smith Funeral Home. Interment took place at Bass Lake Cemetery. Memorials to Knox Cross Country, John Glenn Cross Country or Soccer, or to Oregon-Davis Girls Basketball would be appreciated.[South Bend Tribune]
