Remembrances From Fellow Striders
Here are his PR′s for different distances that I know:
| 5K: | 17:02 |
|---|---|
| 10K: | 33:32 |
| Marathon: | 3:02:07 |
I know about these because I was there. Ray and I have gone to many races together. We talked about PR′s. He was more than just a running friend to me.
I could not tell you how many Gold Cup Series Ray has been in, or how many times he was the age-group champ or how many Gold Cup events he has raced in. In his prime he was ranked 2nd in the 45-49 age-group in the State of Indiana. Hal Higdon was ranked 1st at that time. Ray never beat Hal, but he was always competition for him.
Ray lead in a 15K race in Michigan City against Hal for most of this distance, until Hal overtook him in the later miles. The MC Paper claimed Ray faded to second place, when in essence, he plainly ran out of gas! I remember they both finished around 53 minutes for a 15K!
I remember racing against Ray in the early 80′s, and I rarely beat him,if at all. Ray was running sub 6:00 min. miles then, and he was in his mid 50′s at that time. He always won or placed in his age group.
Every year after the Bass Lake 8-mile race, Ray would have everyone and their families, over at his house for a big cookout. He lived near the race course. It was a neat race, exactly around the lake.
